Jazz at Lincoln Center joins the global jazz community in mourning the loss of legend #JimmyHeath. A true giant of jazz, Heath has been a cherished member of the JALC family from the beginning, first gracing our stages in 1989 and performing in countless unforgettable collaborations, including his 90th birthday celebrations. The master saxophonist, composer, and bandleader was one of the most beloved and generous jazz icons of all time, an invaluable source of inspiration and personal support for younger generations of musicians. JALC curator Phil Schaap says, "Jimmy Heath read the commandments of jazz, and he got them from the great prophets. And he used them in his way to great benefit, even feeding things back towards the prophets. Miles Davis used his stuff. Charlie Parker used his stuff. And John Coltrane was nurtured by Jimmy Heath." We extend our condolences to Mona and the Heath family. (Photo by Joe Martinez for JALC)
